a little research goes a long way....

While there is always debate about the safety of ingredients, there seems to be a growing consensus that we are being exposed to a disturbing number of toxins in personal care products on a daily basis, and that these toxins may pose serious long term effects. I don't claim to be an expert, but for me the solution seems pretty simple - choose wisely what you are putting both in and on your body.

~ Health Canada does not test any cosmetic product that is for sale in Canada. Manufacturers simply have to submit a list of ingredients and their concentrations in each product, and ensure proper labelling.

~ Sulfates (sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, etc.) are a group of inexpensive cleaning agents, which are widely used in soaps and shampoos to create lather. They are known irritants to humans and pose a risk to the environment as well because they are difficult to break down. In addition, depending on the manufacturing process, sulfates may be contaminated with measurable amounts of known and possible human carcinogens.

~ Mineral Oil (baby oil) is produced as a byproduct of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. It is very inexpensive, and is in fact more expensive to dispose of than to purchase. On the skin, it creates a barrier which clogs pores and slows the body's ability to release toxins.

~ Parabens are the most widely used preservatives in cosmetics. They easily penetrate the skin and can minic estrogen. They have been detected in breast cancer tissues and may also interfere with male reproductive functions.

~ Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, such as DMDM Hydantoin, slowly and continuously release small amounts of formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen, into the body.

~ Fragrance recipes are considered "trade secrets" within the industry, so manufacturers are not required to disclose the complex mixture of chemicals used to create these scents. Over 3000 chemicals are widely used as "fragrance." Even products which are labelled "fragrance-free" may contain a fragrance chemical, along with a masking agent which prevents the brain from perceiving odour.
